Stretching from central coastal New South Wales up into southeast Queensland, the Eastern Australian Temperate Forests eco-region incorporates a wide variety of natural environments, microclimates and rich vegetation. However, clearing for land and urban development since the arrival of Europeans has encroached on much of the landscape and continues today. Additionally, invasive weeds attack the native vegetation. One of the most well known areas of the rainforest is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park. The region features a dramatic plateau of sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, eucalyptus forests and a profusion of rare and threatened plant and animal species.
Harapan is a beautiful tropical stretch in the province of Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. It’s one of the biodiversity hot-spots of the world. It’s also home to many of the world’s threatened wildlife species: the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Asian Elephant, Malayan Sun Bear, and Clouded Leopard. Sweetly and understandably, its nickname is “The Forest of Hope.” It’s heaven for wildlife adventurers; the sights will blow you away as a travel lover! Like many other tropical greens, unfortunately, Harapan experiences the same mistreatment from logging, mining, and other harmful commercial acts. Daintree Rainforest: This tropical rainforest is found at the north east coast of Queensland in Australia, named after Richard Daintree. It covers around 2,600 km2. The area between Bloomfield River and Mossman Gorge is entirely covered by the forest and also has the Daintree National Park. Its main river is Daintree River. The forest is home to some of the earliest plants on Earth, such as the Lycopsida and Psilotopsida. It contains the highest number of animals and plant species that are very rare to find. Southeast Asian Rainforest: The forest is found in Asia covering Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, and the Malay Peninsula. It once covered even a greater area in Asia but deforestation destroyed most regions of the rainforest. The forest is home to many rare birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. At one point there were 200 different species of trees in a hectare but the deforestation has put those species in danger. One interesting feature of the rainforest is the dominance of one family of trees, with numerous species of animals, such as Bengal Tiger, Dawn bat, king cobra, and proboscis monkey among others.
While it would seem that the wet environment would result in a prolific mosquito population, the water in El Yunque is constantly running down the mountain and rapidly, and it rains about four times a day preventing any standing water, so there are no mosquitoes in the rainforest. You can wear insect repellent if you choose, but if so DO NOT go into any water sources. The chemicals in bug spray are hazardous to the fragile ecosystem. As technology advanced I saw in 2013 an opportunity to document, in a scientific way, every detail of this forest. Now over 10K images later, I believe I am only starting. Then Hurricane Maria came totally unexpected, and decimated the forest canopy. A new world arose here.
