Laptop service? Reduce the number of programs that start with the computer. Many programs will set themselves to start immediately when your operating system boots. When you try to launch too many programs, the startup process can take a long time. Removing programs that you don’t use from your startup list will help speed up the time it takes your computer to boot. It will also reduce the general load as you use the computer. Free up some hard drive space. In order for your operating system to run efficiently, you’ll want at least 15-20% of your total storage space free. This allows the operating system to write temporary files that will allow it to run more smoothly.

Backing up your data regularly is an overlooked step in personal online security. The top IT and security managers follow a simple rule called the 3-2-1 backup rule. Essentially, you will keep three copies of your data on two different types of media (local and external hard drive) and one copy in an off-site location (cloud storage). If you become a victim of ransomware or malware, the only way to restore your data is to erase your systems and restore with a recently performed backup. Don’t use a public Wi-Fi without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). By using a VPN, the traffic between your device and the VPN server is encrypted. This means it’s much more difficult for a cybercriminal to obtain access to your data on your device. Use your cell network if you don’t have a VPN when security is important.

Enable Secure Email Communication and Training to Mitigate Risk of Phishing Attacks. Email continues to be a weak point in cybersecurity, with data loss/breach and phishing attacks being two of the bigger threats. You should seek an email security solution capable of encrypting messages in transit and at rest, with the ability to verify message origin so it is easy for employees to spot spoofed emails and not fall for phishing. Ease of use for the end users is another important factor to consider.

Windows 10 version 2004 (April 2020 Update or May 2020 Update) is the next major release expected to be available for supported devices sometime during spring 2020. This will be the first of two feature updates coming this year, and it’s an update that will ship with a new set of features and improvements to tweak and enhance the overall experience. Although this new version is not a massive update that will significantly change the way you use your device, it’s a small update that includes a slew of incremental improvements and some small features around optimization, security, and productivity. Microsoft has been adding more and more natural language tooling to Windows 10, branching out from Cortana, and it now supports dictation across many common languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese. This works in any text field, although you may need to download the appropriate speech resources to use the feature. It’s easy enough to use: click in a text box and press WIN + H.

You can simply right-click on any unwanted app tile in Start and choose Uninstall. This will immediately uninstall the program. You can also right-click on the Windows logo Start button, and choose the top choice Programs and Features. Or just type Programs in the Cortana search box next to the Start button. You can usually find the culprits by sorting the list of installed apps on the name of your PC maker. Other good options are to sort by Recent to see if there are any programs you didn’t know you installed; or by Size, to get rid of very large items you don’t need. When you’ve found junk apps you don’t want, simply select them and click Uninstall. Unfortunately, you can only remove one at a time, so set aside a half hour or so for this project if you have a bunch of bloatware. Don’t forget to take the hatchet to apps you installed yourself but no longer want, and for software you don’t want that was installed alongside software you did want.
